Coastal Georgia artists come together to present Cultural Expressions show

In honor of Black History Month, five African-American artists in McIntosh County came together in 2013 to present, Cultural Expressions, a colorful, creative art show experience.

From Serena Hall’s sassy “Dresser Ladies” paintings to Flora Mungin Youman’s peaceful beach landscapes, there was something for everyone. Ethel Wilson paints everything from vibrant flowers to joyful backwoods juke joints. Loretta Pressley’s oil paintings reflect her love of discovery, while Michele Nicole Johnson prefers whimsical cut paper creations that lean toward fantasy.

 

The show was held at art instructor Carly Hardy’s studio, The Art Cottage, 111 First St. W., in Darien, Georgia. The opening reception was on Saturday, Feb. 16, and the show also was open Feb. 17, and 23-24. The McIntosh County Shouters performed during the kickoff of the second weekend of the art show.

Each woman's work reflected her own personal style and way of looking at the world, yet all shared a common theme – a celebration of their culture and the freedom of expression.

More than 150 people attended the Cultural Expressions art show. Many expressed pride in being a part of this event.
